1. ADD FUEL TO THE FIRE

When someone does something to make a bad situation worse.

Ex: After his incarceration, the police seized all his properties, and to add fuel to the fire, his bank accounts were frozen.

 

2. AT A CROSSROADS

To be at a point in your life when you need to make an important decision

Ex: I was at a crossroads when I was offered a job in Ghana, but I got my admission to a school in Canada.

 

3. ALL EARS

To be eagerly waiting to hear about something

Rose: “I have to tell you about what happened during my date with Omalaye”

Essohanam: “I’m all ears!”

 

COMMON PHRASES

1. Abstemious Diet

Sparing or moderate in eating and drinking; temperate in the diet. Characterized by abstinence: an abstemious life.

Refraining from freely consuming food or strong drink; sparing in the diet; abstinent, temperate.

Ex: After the player’s weight gain, for two months he followed an abstemious nutritional diet and planned a daily workout with a physiotherapist. He surprised everyone with his physique.

 

2. Ambitious Project

Ambitious = having a strong desire for success or achievement;  having a great desire (for something or to do something)

Ambitious project= A project necessitating extraordinary effort or ability

Ex: The construction of the green and futuristic << Akon City >>  in Senegal is an ambitious project.

 

3. Apocalyptic Vision

Apocalyptic =   relating to the destruction of something, especially of the world.

Apocalyptic Vision = A vision involving predictions about future disasters and the destruction of the world.

A gloomy vision of a world hastening towards ruin.

Ex: At the dawn of the year 2000, predictions were that our computerized and electrified civilization would descend into chaos.
